Some scents mark the calendar better than dates do. In Irpinia, that scent arrives in September: cool air moving through the rows, freshly picked grapes, must. Campania is a land of ancient grape varieties, and the hills around Avellino are its heart: mineral-rich soils, notable altitudes, strong day-night temperature swings. It’s this combination that gives the wines two qualities that are hard to hold together — freshness and character.
And yet today’s harvest is no longer the harvest of the past. In 2026 the intense heat brought picking forward — already underway in August across many areas — with promising quality but smaller volumes. So unpredictable a vintage that the industry bodies themselves have given up on forecasting it.
In a climate that shifts this quickly, choosing well matters more than ever. Best Italian Selection has picked five wines to tell the story of this land.
The freshness of Campania’s whites wines
Fiano
Fiano is one of Italy’s most noble white grapes. Ours Fiano comes from selected fruit grown in the villages of Candida, Lapio, San Michele di Serino and Montefredane, in the province of Avellino.
In the glass it is straw yellow with golden highlights; the nose offers an intense bouquet of white flowers, honey and ripe fruit, closing on delicate mineral notes. The palate is balanced and fresh, with long persistence. Perfect with shellfish and seafood, fish-based pasta dishes, fresh and semi-aged cheeses, and delicate white meats.
Greco
Greco BIS comes from the hills of Montefusco, Tufo, Santa Paolina and Petruro: mineral-rich soils and a microclimate that give it an unmistakable personality.
Straw yellow with golden reflections, it offers notes of white-fleshed fruit, ripe peach and citrus, with floral and mineral nuances that speak of its origin. The palate is harmonious, freshness balanced by an appealing minerality. Excellent with seafood starters, fish-based pasta, shellfish and seafood, it also pairs beautifully with fresh cheeses and vegetarian dishes.
falanghina
From the vineyards of Torrecuso, in the Sannio area near Benevento, comes Falanghina BIS: one of Campania’s most representative native grapes.
Bright straw yellow with greenish highlights, the nose is floral and fruity — green apple, pear and citrus; the palate is fresh, savoury and well balanced, with pleasant persistence. It is the aperitif white par excellence, but it also stands up to fish dishes, seafood, light starters and fresh cheeses.
The elegance of the rosé
Ours Rosato is made exclusively from Aglianico grapes grown in the vineyards of Castelfranci, in the province of Avellino.
The secret lies in the winemaking: the grapes macerate for twelve hours in stainless steel tanks, just long enough to draw aroma and colour gently from the skins. The result is a bright pink hue and a distinctive aromatic profile, where fruity and floral notes blend in perfect harmony. Poised between freshness and structure, it is elegant with aperitifs and starters, fish dishes and white meats.
Aglianico: the great character of Irpinia’s red
Aglianico is Irpinia’s great red. Ours is made from 100% Aglianico grown at different elevations: Castelfranci (550 metres), Bonito (400) and Venticano (300). Different exposures that translate into a distinctive aromatic complexity.
Deep ruby red with garnet reflections, it opens on a bouquet of ripe red fruit, spice and balsamic notes; the palate is structured, warm and enveloping, with a long, persistent finish. It is the companion of robust dishes: pasta al ragù, melanzane alla parmigiana, grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses. An outstanding choice for anyone who loves the great reds of southern Italy.
From the hillside to our selection
Best Italian Selection exists to do one thing, and do it well: choose the finest expressions of a territory and take them to the world. The harvest is where that journey begins — the moment quality is decided in the vineyard, today more than ever, when every vintage differs from the one before.
Five grapes, five glasses, one thread: growers who know what they are doing, and a selection that carries them far.
